Born in a small village in Odisha, Sushil Dhanwar didn’t stumble upon hockey, it became his purpose. Growing up in Rourkela, surrounded by the energy of a town passionate about sports, Sushil found his calling early.
At a young age, Sushil joined Birsa Munda Nodal Vidyapitha, a school known for nurturing hockey talent. Under the guidance of Coach Kalu Charan Choudhury, his raw talent transformed into skill, precision, and discipline. For Sushil, hockey was more than a sport, it was a path to prove himself and bring pride to his community.
Soon, his hard work began to pay off. In 2018, he helped the Odisha boys’ team clinch gold at the 1st Khelo India School Games in New Delhi. That same year, he played a crucial role in Odisha’s 4th place finish at the Hockey India Junior Men National Championship in Bhopal. These early successes marked the beginning of a career built on resilience and hard work.
In 2019, Sushil’s journey hit another high point when he was a key player in Hockey Odisha’s gold medal-winning campaign at the 9th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship in Aurangabad. And in 2020, he continued this streak, securing a bronze medal with the Odisha U-21 men’s team at the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games in Guwahati.
Now, as he joins the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League, Sushil brings his determination and passion to the turf. For this young player, every match is a new chapter, every goal a tribute to the boy from Odisha who believed in his dreams. For Sushil Dhanwar, hockey isn’t just about the game, it’s about proving that no matter where you come from, hard work can take you to the top.
