India Defeats Spain 2-0 in Second FIH Pro League Match

The Indian men’s hockey team bounced back strongly after a disappointing start to their FIH Pro League campaign, securing a 2-0 victory over Spain at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday..

After a 3-1 loss in the season opener on Saturday, India looked like a transformed side in their second match. They were more composed in possession and aggressive in their pressing. However, despite their improved performance, they struggled to create clear attacking opportunities in the first half, with several moves breaking down near the attacking circle.

At halftime, head coach Craig Fulton emphasized the need for patience in the final third, urging the team to focus on an extra pass rather than forcing plays. The tactical adjustment paid off swiftly.

Mandeep Singh, who had been struggling for goals at both the international level and in the Hockey India League, opened the scoring for India. A quick free-hit restart found Dilpreet Singh inside the circle, whose shot was saved. The rebound fell kindly to Mandeep, who slotted it into an open net.

India doubled their lead in the third quarter, this time through Dilpreet. Mandeep played a key role in the build-up, receiving the ball on the turn and setting up Gurjant Singh. Though Gurjant’s shot was scuffed, it deflected perfectly into Dilpreet’s path, allowing him to lift the ball over the goalkeeper and give India a comfortable lead.

The fourth quarter proved to be a defensive battle for India as they faced multiple penalty corners. However, the team stood firm, with goalkeeper Suraj Karkera making crucial saves and defenders Jugraj Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh putting in commendable performances to maintain the clean sheet.

With this win, India has gained momentum in the FIH Pro League, showing resilience and tactical discipline against a strong Spanish side.
